eat yer greens!

A couple months ago I planted a few veggies in the backyard. I had no idea what I was doing, but I wanted to see if maybe I had a green thumb. A green pinky would be ok with me, just as long as I got something out of those little teeny tiny plants. Someone once told me that it's nearly impossible to kill a tomato plant, so I planted four of them. They're out of control. I don't see any plump red tomatoes yet, but when they show up I'm going to be making salsa and spaghetti sauce for days. Fortunately for the salsa, my cilantro plant is almost up to my belly button. I also planted three different kinds of lettuce, and I was pretty dang excited to see that they were growing even after my big clumsy puppy trampled one of them.. of course, my excitement quickly turned into frustration when I came out to see little holes where my lettuce once lived. Let's just say I'm going to train my new kitty to be the best dang gopher hunter on the central coast. Last but not least, the broccoli. Call me a city girl, but I was really curious to see how broccoli grew. For a long time it was just a big leafy plant, I couldn't figure out where the "little trees" would come from. Then one day I came home to a whole bunch of broccoli growing right in the middle of the big leafy plant! I waited til they were just the right size, then snapped them off and hurried inside, all giddy about actually turning a little leaf into something edible.

Here's a picture of my "creation." For dinner tonight, we had seasoned chicken breasts, garlic mashed potatoes, and steamed broccoli with cheese sauce. Delicious!
