Summer Garden

Well folks, here it is!
The beginning of my summer garden. They're in pots for now until I have the ground all cleaned up to plant. I need a few more items in order to keep the stinking gophers away this year. Last year they ate all three of my precious lettuce plants before I could even get one salad. I've decided to plant the lettuce this year in a half barrel on the back patio. Hopefully that will be enough to keep them out from underneath. Also, since the snails enjoyed last year's strawberries, I'm going to buy two hanging planters and see if that does the trick. As for the veggies that are going into the ground, I have "gopher baskets" on my list. I guess you put the little plant in a gopher basket in the ground so when they come around to nibble they can't (shouldn't) get through the wire to the actual plant.

Oh, and I found the cutest tomato cages ever. Yes, tomato cages can be cute. They're RED! And no, I did not spend a ridiculous amount of money for these guys. They actually cost less than the boring old wire cages. They're much sturdier, too, so I'll get years and years of use out of them. I can't wait to get some pictures of my big red tomatoes growing in the cute red cages!

It's the little things in life that really get me.

So, as I mentioned in my last post, I took way too many pictures of all my new veggies. I narrowed it down to only one photo of each. Hey, they were totally posing for me, and the lighting was wonderful, what did you expect me to do?

While I was at the store getting my adorable tomato cages, I couldn't help but grab a few seed packets: zucchini, watermelon, cantaloupe, edamame, and some mint, just for fun.

And maybe, just maybe, I'll get my wish for some chickens later this summer.

You can call me farmer Jenna.

  1. There was no way, a few years ago, I would have ever thought of you as farmer Jenna. Them country folk be getting to you! I think it's cute, and you just might be changing my mind about the chickens, MAYBE! Can't wait to see you in a few weeks. Aside from all the nursery decorating we must stop for a photo walk break.

  2. WOW! And I thought I was good baking yams bought from the grocery store to make your "homemade" baby food 24 years ago.

You are inspiring me, I was just looking out the window this morning at my potential garden area!
