Let's talk diapers.

Cloth diapers, that is.

You read that right, cloth diapers.
Before you call me crazy, hear me out.

A box of 216 Kirkland brand diapers from Costco costs $38.99. (Huggies cost $49.99) Paige goes through about 10 diapers a day right now, sometimes more. So that box would last 21.6 days, lets round it up to 22 days. In a month (30 days) we'd use 300 diapers, which is almost one and a half boxes of disposables. One and a half boxes equals about $58. $58 per month for 2 years, assuming potty training starts at 2 years old, would end up costing $1,392. Then multiply that by the number of children we end up having and we'll have our grand total for diapering with disposables.

One popular cloth diaper brands is BumGenius, an all-in-one diapering system. One BumGenius diaper costs $17.95 (cheaper if you buy in bulk or buy used). I could buy 10 diapers, but just to be on the safe side let's say I stock up on 16. 16 BumGenius diapers would cost me $287.20. Add another $200 for the cost of washing the diapers (don't quote me on this, I really didn't calculate the cost of water/energy/detergent) Since the diapers I picked are "one-size", they adjust as the child grows, so no need to buy different sizes. Also, you could use the same diapers for each child, which would give you a grand total of $487.20.

All that said, comparing the cheaper brand of disposables with the expensive brand of cloth diapers, we would save $904.80 just with our first child, even more with our future children because we'd already have the supply of cloth diapers.

Since I'm a bargain shopper, I already found some barely used pink (so cute!) BumGenius diapers on Craigslist and bought them from a nice lady for $10 each. I also received 2 other brands as a baby shower gift, so my grand total so far is 4 cloth diapers for $20. I'd say I'm off to a good start! I also heard of another good brand today that are only $10-ish brand new.

There.
I laid it out for you.
Do you still think I'm crazy?

*Disclaimer: I am in no way telling you or anyone else what to do with your diapering decisions, nor would I shake my finger at someone for using disposables. I am all for convenience, and disposables are the definition of convenient! I just can't help myself-- when I can save money and have my baby look super adorable in just a diaper, I'm gonna go for it.

** Disclaimer Number Two: We used disposables up to last week. Paige was too small for the cloth diapers we had, and we were given disposable diapers for baby shower gifts, so we went ahead and used what we had.

Did you really think I'd bore you with
talk about diapers for an entire blog post
and not give you ANY type of reward at the end?
Psh. Come on.
You know me better than that.

PS- Yes, we like headbands. Maybe (if you're lucky) I'll show you what happens to them during nap-time.

  1. Haha! She's so sweet! :) We're also hoping to use the cloth diapers. People always give me the "are you nutts" look, lol. It's totally worth it when you compare the savings and the fact that it's not filling up the landfills. My only concern is will it work for us once I return to work...but since by then my mom will be watching our son it hopefully won't be a problem. I'm looking forward to hearing more about your diapering...maybe you can teach me a thing or two about these diapers before my boy gets here. I've never used these before. I registered for the bum genius diapers....

  2. Jenna - This makes total sense when you figure it all out. However, I just want to say, when she's at Grandma's, she just might be seen in disposable a time or two.....

LOVE the new pics, can't wait to smooch on her in a couple of weeks!
